DISCOVER THE VOYAGE

Part concert and part demonstration, Voyage of Musical Discovery programs pair Classical or Romantic works with new music by Australian composers, especially women. The 90-minute Voyage links musical structure, themes and stories with a dynamic, interactive narrative that's different from other music education programs. It’s designed around Yr 9-12 learning standards, but captivates all ages!

Our 2024 QLD Voyage Tour features music by Mozart and a brand new commissioned piece by Queensland composer Nicole Murphy for the rare basset clarinet. It's presented by ARCO clarinettist Nicole van Bruggen and Nicole Murphy with musicians from the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra.

The QLD Voyage tour runs parallel with the ARCO QLD Concert Tour, and all Voyage attendees receive a free ticket to an evening performance. Schools pay a group fee, and can bring as many students as they like within an overall cap.

This groundbreaking program was established and designed by the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra and its founding artistic director and world-renowned educator, the late Richard Gill, and has been incredibly popular since its 2018 launch.

*Student numbers may be capped depending on venue size.

COMPOSERS

Nicole Murphy is a Brisbane-based composer whose music has been described as “exquisite and sensitive”, and “strong and compelling”. The recipient of numerous awards, she teaches composition at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.

Nicole joins our tour to co-present her ARCO-commissioned world premiere for historic basset clarinet and strings.

W.A. Mozart was an 18th century composer who wrote some of the most enchanting music of all time.

STORIES & LEARNING

In this Voyage of Musical Discovery, you’ll hear the amazing story of the basset clarinet – invented by Mozart’s friends. Theodor and Anton, featured in his famous Quintet and Concerto, then lost for centuries until an incredible discovery at a Latvian castle in the 1990s.

You’ll hear the gorgeous sonorities of all the instruments, discover how both Mozart and Murphy weave them into musical themes, structure and emotion, and get inspired to create your own music.
