Kim is in the unique position of being a professional cellist, operatic singer, conductor and director, and balances his musical engagements between these freelance activities, as well as his private teaching studio.

Born in Adelaide, Kim completed his Bachelors degree with Honours in performance at the Elder Conservatorium, studying with Janis Laurs, before moving to Melbourne to take up studies at the Australian National Academy of Music with renowned cellist and pedagogue, Howard Penny. While at ANAM, Kim completed his Masters degree in Music Research on the cello and, after returning to Adelaide in 2017, gained another Masters degree, this time in the field of orchestral conducting, studying under Luke Dollman.

Kim brings a wealth and breadth of experience to his music-making. He has performed with such orchestras as the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria and the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra, and is a core member of Adelaide-based multi-instrumental outfit Kegelstatt Ensemble.  He appears regularly in the chorus of the State Opera of South Australia and has sung the role of Acis in “Acis and Galatea” with Co-Opera. Kim also co-founded the early music ensemble Adelaide Cantata Band, with which he has been vocal soloist, continuo cellist and director/conductor.
