2018 concert season

From the Artistic Director

PASTORAL, CLASSICAL & POETICAL MELODIES
Sweet music, whether vocal or instrumental; beautiful arrangement of musical sounds; beauty of musical sounds, tunefulness. Thus reads the definition of melody as found in the Oxford English Dictionary, Volume IX of the twenty-volume set.

As the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra enters its fifth year, it is quite reasonable to say that beauty of musical sound was uppermost in our minds when we planned this season.

Mendelssohn’s idyllic Hebrides Overture and Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, one of the world’s most melodious symphonies, share a program with the rarely performed Brahms Songs, sung by the Sydney Chamber Choir, together with Mozart’s Spaur Mass.

Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik, one of the best known Classical melodies in the world, will be performed alongside chamber works new to Australian audiences continuing our tuneful journey to Beethoven’s thrilling Storm Quintet.

Dvorák’s Serenade for Strings celebrates a Romantic musical feast together with beautiful melodies by Mendelssohn and Grieg, including his renowned Holberg Suite, Puccini’s elegy Crisantemi, and Van Bree’s Allegro for Four String Quartets.

The word melody, according to the OED was first heard about 1290. Here we are in 2018, over seven hundred years later still using the word and enjoying the beauty of musical sounds.

Please join us on our 2018 melodic adventure. We would very much enjoy your company.
