Tchaikovsky’s impressions of visiting Italy in the late 1800s were so profound that he composed one of the main themes of his Romantic Souvenir de Florence while there. The Souvenir is a program of references and influences, and continues the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra’s cycle of showcasing world-class soloists performing Mozart Concerti. This year’s featured artist is a regular guest – natural horn specialist Anneke Scott from London. She performs Mozart’s Horn Concerto No.3, a work that transports the instrument from its hunting-horn past into the modern age. Ms Scott also takes the lead in the prominent horn part of Beethoven’s Sextet for winds. The Souvenir opens with one of Mozart’s outdoor entertainment works for strings and timpani – a lively and humorous work from the Classical period.
